Like all of my cds, this is an Original CD, with original inserts (NO CD-Rs or bootlegs).....

No matter what people say about Columbus, it does have a kicking music scene under its farm town mindset. Not many bands make it big in the capital city but there are numerous acts that are wonderful to watch and listen. One of the strangest bands to come from our city is the band “The Staggers Are Dead…Long Live The Staggers”.

With an alternative sound, listeners need to hear in order to believe. To some it may sound like the Bloodhound Gang but their music is more extreme in every aspect. While both bands play a style of music that pokes fun at sex and drugs the Staggers raise the ethical bar by singing funky stuff like “DickButtDick,” the title of song number four on their new album. They are one of the most original bands to make it out of C-bus in a long time and maybe this is the right time for them to make it big.

The Staggers new album is being released by Overtone Records, a independent record label. The album has been available for a few months and has come with quite a bit of publicity. The members of the Staggers play under pseudonyms starting with Filthy Hands on front lyrics and back-up guitars, Conrath on head guitar and Beatloaf on drums. The three members seem deranged and play music that fits their personalities.

The first three songs on the album are void of lyrics and voice. It isn’t until the wonderful song “Stripperland” that we get to hear one of the worst singers of all time chant about strip clubs. Filthy Hands as he calls himself has one of the worst voices to ever grace an album. Which is probably why the band doesn’t have many songs with Filthy Hands blowing up his voice box. The entire time he just screams without any tone control or mindfulness that music is playing behind him and in tune. Yeah the music is alternative, but other alternative bands like Beck and Smashing Pumpkins have original and entertaining singers. It’s the only real big complaint about the local alt-rock.

One of the cool things about the band is the interesting titles of the songs on the CD like the first song “27 Tits on 13 Women” or my favorite “DickButtDick” and yes that’s how they spell them, very interesting indeed. There are some songs about more serious affairs like “Mother’s Way” when Filthy Hands talks so dearly about his loving mum.

Then there is “Four Year Life Span” which starts off with a cool riff and grooves but without any lyrics, yet still has an edgier sound than most of the tracks on the new album. The names of some of their songs are just down right funny and some disturbing all at the same time.

The one song that would rightfully clear up the confusion about The Staggers is the famous “DickButtDick.” It starts out with a jazzy sound while Filthy Hands sings for about 30 seconds using poetry to describe dicks and butts. Then the next song “Pigf——” continues the theme of sex and has a porno scene playing in the background. To some this maybe cool and a great concept, to others it may sound gratuitously vulgar; and because the song isn’t that funny so there is no real point for the vulgarity.

The Staggers are a strange band to say the least and for people that like this kind of stuff they should pick up this new album. The band is not polished enough to make every song on the album entertaining but, to say the least, are very interesting. The Staggers proclaim to be an alternative band and maybe they will mature, someday, to creating “alternative” music.
