After getting off to an explosive start by releasing four consecutive solo albums of solid material, Rod Stewart caught his breath by putting together the SING IT AGAIN ROD compilation. Appropriately enough, the original vinyl release was shaped like a tumbler of whiskey in which the hard-drinking Stewart's grinning visage floated between a pair of ice cubes. Within the confines of the record were an assortment of covers (the Stones' "Street Fighting Man," Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe") and a handful of recordings either written by Stewart ("Mandolin Wind") or with either Martin Quittenton ("Maggie May") or Ron Wood ("Lost Paraguayos," "Gasoline Alley.") The one constant running through these compositions is the way in which Stewart gives himself over to a song. Liberally applying his soulful rasp, Stewart ranges from tender ruminations ("Country Comfort") to a raucous sensibility that gives an edge to something as genteel as the Motown sound ("[I Know] I'm Losing You".)
